Sparks are an American rock band formed in Los Angeles in 1971 by brothers Ron (keyboards) and Russell Mael (vocals), renamed from Halfnelson, formed in 1968. Known for their quirky approach to songwriting, Sparks' music is often accompanied by intelligent, sophisticated, and acerbic lyrics, and an idiosyncratic, theatrical stage presence, typified in the contrast between Russell's animated, hyperactive frontman antics and Ron's deadpan scowling. They are also noted for Russell Mael's falsetto voice and Ron Mael's keyboard style.

En 2017 se cumplen 15 años del disco que los hizo renacer de sus cenizas: "Lil' Beethoven", seria bonito un DLB.

Recupero la clásica cruzada de diegogomez y cia

Quins es una aldea de la provincia de Ourense que si por algo debería ser conocida es porque de allí son Álvaro Lorenzo, Emilio José González Pérez y Belén Rodríguez Martínez, y allí grabaron, como Apeirón, “Todo Sigue Intacto” (Foehn, 2002), uno de los mejores discos de los últimos años. Uno de los mejores, y uno de los más importantes podríamos añadir, si no fuera porque Apeiron crea un universo propio con escasa repercusión fuera de su entorno: su empecinada (y necesaria) discográfica Foehn Records y, claro está, ellos mismos.

Con apenas 18 años, los tres Apeiron crean una obra única y difícil de clasificar. Hay quienes apuntaban a los grupos del sello alemán Morr y la electrónica más cercana al pop. Pero, salvo Múm (grupo más ambicioso y convencional que los de Quins) pocas cosas se parecen a Apeiron. Así Álvaro se encargaba de la guitarra, Emilio del piano, el bajo y esas percusiones hechas con cajas de cartón, y Belén de la melódica y las voces. Con la ayuda de David Crespo, de Balago editan así en 2002 su primer y, de momento, único disco.

Yo solo puedo añadir que es uno de los pocos discos en castellano que me consiguió enganchar sobremanera en su momento y ha mejorado con el paso del tiempo. Una pequeña gran joya. Hay momentos en los que me recuerdan a The Notwist por poner un ejemplo
Hablando con Emilio José en algún Faraday pasado entre copas de cerveza y ron creo recordar que el me dijo q no se reunian simplemnete porque no se lo habian propuesto ellos y un poco por falta de tiempo, pero un empujón así seguro que les valdría la pena...

MYSTIC BRAVES (Usa)

Mystic Braves podrian pasar perfectamente en el año 1965 por ser una de las bandas punteras en la psych scene de esa decada, pero sin embargo son una banda de ahora.
Después de una extensa gira en Usa, con enormes shows desde Brooklyn a Seattle, la banda volvió a su casa, Los Ángeles, para hacer sold out en el legendario Troubador de West Hollywood.
Es sólo el último de una serie de triunfos para la banda, que fué testigo de una masiva participación por parte del público en todos sus shows en Usa antes de la publicación de su tercer album.
Acaban de firmar con uno de los sellos más punteros en Usa (Lolipop Records) y podria decirse que son la punta de lanza de la cada vez más efervescente escena de Psych/Garage Revival en Usa.
La banda esta formada por, Julian Ducatenzeiler guitarra y voces, Tony Malacara bajo y voces, Shane Stotsenberg guitarra y voces, Cameron Gartung a la bateria y Ignacio Gonzalez teclado y percusión.

YOUR FRIEND

A principios del 2014, Taryn Miller (Your Friend) se autoeditó su EP "Jekyll/Hyde" con los 1.000 $ que ganó en un concurso de bandas.

Este año acaba de sacar su primer disco con Domino Records, "GUMPTION". Producido junto a Nicolas Vernhes (The War on Drugs, Deerhunter), es un disco lleno de texturas y de tensión contenida. El sonido es cercano a Jana Hunter (Lower Dens), los primeros Grizzly Bear o el Bradford Cox más meditativo. El primer disco es más "rock de persona con guitarra" y desarrollos instrumentales, mientras que el nuevo disco tiene más capas, drones, loops, sonidos encontrados, etc.

PC WORSHIP

Creo que seguiré con propuestas anteriores de bandas jóvenes de cruzar el charco, los que sigan muy activos y con trayectoria musical ascendente…

Banda de Brooklyn - New York con buen hacer en directo (comprobado). Jams noise rock, al estilo de los momentos rarunos de Yo La Tengo en los 90, pero sin acaramelamientos. Al combo tradicional se le pueden unir un cassettematón o instrumentos de cuerda construidos por ellos. O un saxo.

A tramos psyche-rock, a ratos art-rock, a ratos grunge… Van de un lado a otro y encaja a la perfección.

LA RED BULLET

Ya les puse en 2015 y los vuelvo a poner de nuevo. Propuesta nacional de aupa, de unos tios, que en esta misma edicion han pisado el recinto como fans pero que la tralla que meten en directo bien les vale hacerles subir al escenario. Quinteto Navarro de post rock que cuenta entre sus principales influencias a Explosions in the sky, Sigur Rós, This Will Destroy You, Pink Floyd o Radiohead. Casi ná. A principio de 2013 han lanzaron su primer LP, Railways una maravilla de 12 piezas progresivas que merece una escucha. Pero ha sido con su ultimo album, cuando han alcanzado una madurez maravillosa que les hace ponerse a la cabeza nacional del post rock.

Tienen un directo brutal del que espero, todos podamos disfrutar el próximo año en algún escenario

THE POLYPHONIC SPREE

Llevo asistiendo al festival hace muchos años y nunca los he visto. Igual en las primeras ediciones estaban, o han venido al primavera club, pero mirando los carteles me parece que no están.

Para los que no los conozca, tirando de Wikipedia:
The Polyphonic Spree (también conocidos simplemente como Polyphonic Spree) es una banda de rock/pop coral, formado en el 2000 en Dallas, Texas. liderado por el músico Tim DeLaughter, contando con más de nueve miembros en su agrupación, es considerado uno de los grupos mas intuitivos y originales. Contaban con más de 10 coristas en el grupo, aunque debido al cambio del grupo, se ha reducido drásticamente a 6 miembros en su alineación actual.

The band's sound relies on a variety of vocal and instrumental color by featuring a choir, flute, trumpet, french horn, trombone, violin, viola, cello, percussion, piano, guitars, bass, drums, electronic keyboards and EWI.

Les he podido ver en 2000 y 2004 y creo que no han vuelto ha pisar España, siempre que han hecho gira ni se han acercado por aquí. Flipantes en directo y me imagino que baratos de traer. Un clásico de Thrill Jockey que debería haber venido al Primavera hace tiempo. Copón.

He is predominantly associated with post-minimalist, drone and electronic music, exploring textural aesthetics for over half a decade. TRAMPLED BY TURTLES

No se si alguna vez hemos tenido alguna banda de bluegrass en el festival, es un género que me gusta y puestos a traer una, que sea de las más sobresalientes: Trampled By Turtles quedarían bien un día a media tarde en el escenario Ray Ban, con el sol calentando el ambiente y los banjos, violines y guitarras sonando a máxima velocidad.

MAARJA NUUT

Maarja Nuut es una violinista y cantante del norte de Estonia. Su música combina melodías tradicionales de baile, canciones y cuentos con electrónica en vivo, creando un paisaje sonoro de capas intrincadas donde el minimalismo y la música experimental convergen con las tradiciones musicales de la Europa de preguerra.

Sólo lleva un violín, un pedal de loop y un tablado de madera.
El tablado cumple la función de instumento percusivo, pues va golpeándolo y girando sobre él, creando unos ritmos típicos de baile tradicional Estonio.
Con el pedal, el violin y su voz va generando capas de melodías que recuerdan a cantos ancestrales.
Digno de ver.
Suele tocar en auditorio, puesto que a cada canción la acompaña una historia que cuenta y relata antes de empezar.
Acaba de sacar un nuevo disco en Junio de 2016.

WINTERGATAN

Wintergatan (Vía Láctea en sueco) es el proyecto que creó Martin Molin después de la separación de Detektivbyrån.

Es un grupo de folktrónica que en su, hasta ahora único disco, combinaba guitarras, batería, teclados, etc con instrumentos poco habituales en el pop como el theremin, el acordeón, etc.

Sin embargo, lo que de manera reciente ha hecho relativamente famosa a la banda es la creación de máquinas musicales construidas exprofeso (lo que les emparenta con Cabo San Roque).

Kishi Bashi is the pseudonym of singer, multi-instrumentalist, and songwriter Kaoru Ishibashi (born November 4, 1975). Born in Seattle, Washington,
Ishibashi has recorded and toured internationally as a violinist with diverse artists such as Regina Spektor, Sondre Lerche, and most recently, the Athens, Georgia-based indie rock band, of Montreal.

Kishi Bashi is also the singer and founding member of the New York electronic rock outfit, Jupiter One. In 2011, he started to record and perform as a solo artist, opening for Sondre Lerche,[4] Alexi Murdoch, and of Montreal. He supported of Montreal on their spring 2012 tour.[5]

The band's name, pronounced "AH-LOO-CHA-TEES-TAS", is a portmanteau of "Ah-Leu-Cha", the Charlie Parker song, and "Zapatistas", the Mexican revolutionary movement: "Musical revolution and social revolution combined into a single coinage.

Ahleuchatistas are an American instrumental math rock duo that mix influences of jazz, progressive rock, avant-garde, and experimental to create a unique sound. The band was formed in Asheville, North Carolina in November 2002.

Ahleuchatistas' sound is rooted in a wide variety of sonic influences and musical traditions. In addition to being an instrumental rock band, there are elements of noise, African music, ambient/drone, psychedelia, Chinese traditional music, garage rock, minimalism, classical music, and electronica. They employ block-form, thru-composition, and improvisational musical strategies. Sudden tempo changes, amelodic tones, and technically complex motifs are prominent characteristics of much of the band's recorded output. The original members of the band were Shane Perlowin on guitar, Derek Poteat on bass, and Sean Dail on drums. Sean Dail left the band in May 2008 and was replaced by Ryan Oslance, a drummer from Carbondale, Illinois. Ryan was found by a reply to a MySpace bulletin outlining the band's request for a new drummer. He then drove to Asheville, auditioned, and the band immediately rehearsed for 25+ hours over a four-day period. This was followed by a 3 week US tour. Ahleuchatistas have released six albums on different record labels, including Cuneiform Records, Angura Sound, Tzadik Records, and guitarist Shane Perlowin's independent label Open Letter Records. DOWN OF MIDI

Dawn of Midi is a Brooklyn-based acoustic ensemble made up of Aakaash Israni from India on double bass, Amino Belyamani from Morocco on piano and Qasim Naqvi from Pakistan on drums. Formed in 2007, the band name was happened upon after Naqvi casually uttered the phrase by chance as a non sequitur for the improvised music the trio was making at the time, they had no idea that years later they would make an album like Dysnomia that would make their name appear fateful.

Having met at California Institute of the Arts in Los Angeles in 2006, the trio found their original rapport through late night tennis matches on the campus court. The chemistry they founded there eventually led them back indoors to improvise together; something they did in total darkness to deprive themselves of all their senses except the crucial one – their hearing.

With Dysnomia, Dawn of Midi abandon improvisation in favour of composition, utilising sophisticated rhythmic structures from North and West African folk traditions to weave a sonic tapestry of trance-inducing grooves. From close up one may see only dots, but when stepping back an undulating image reveals itself.

Banda londinense formada por Tom Cullinan de mediados de los 90. Sacaron solo 3 discos y varios EPs en 5 años, y todos son auténticos pepinacos de space-kraut-noise rock. Después del 2000 solo han sacado un single en 2005 y no se ha vuelto a saber nada más de ellos..
El Primavera a lo mejor tiene mano para conseguir traerles ya que el grupo anterior de Culminan (Th´Faith Healers) tocaron en el festival hace unos años. Uno de mis grupos favoritos.

CASE/LANG/VEIRS

Hace algunos años, en un impulso, k.d. lang envió un email a Neko Case y Laura Veris en el que decía, “creo que deberíamos grabar un disco juntas”. Las tres eran muy diferentes y casi desconocidas entre ellas, pero se gustaban y admiraban entre todas, así que instantáneamente todo fue bien. Case admitió que fue k.d. quién prendió la llama y que tanto ella como Laura supieron inmediatamente que debían grabar ese disco.

El resultado es case/lang/veirs, un disco que incluye 14 canciones escritas e interpretadas entre las tres. Es un disco lleno de armonías vocales y ritmos en el que cada una ha aportado su toque personal. El resultado es una colección de joyas que merece la pena escuchar.

Biography

Currently docking in Bristol, UK, Giant Swan are an embryonic, shapeshifting duo who press repeat and take aim at the sun. Grabbing the necessary sounds from guitars, pedals and their own throats, Robin Stewart and Harry Wright coax raw-hearted live experiences that are constantly shifting in their stillness, bleeding between several sonic movements that both obliterate and invigorate and find them drifting away, serene and discordant, from the noise-techno bevy.
Vital players within Bristol’s Howling Owl collective and with strong ties to Young Echo, Stewart and Wright formed a preteen musical alliance as part of psych guitar miscreants The Naturals: Giant Swan sees them go feral, a cross-breed of hypnotic bass, industrial percussion and disorientating noise delivered with telepathic intricacy.
Most Giant Swan live detonations to date have been in their locale, joining the likes of Vessel, Shackleton, Container, Venetian Snares and Ansome in reducing stages to rubble: now they are ready to realise their primal potential in whichever dark, hot rooms will host them.
June 2016 sees the release of their double A-side 12″ on Fuck Punk records following on from their self-titled debut on Howling Owl Records, the first mighty wing beats sounded in the year of the Swan.
