The Hulk star Eric Bana is the frontrunner to play tragic Crocodile Hunter Steve Irwin in a potential biopic, as far as the celebrity conservationist's best pal is concerned.

Irwin's friend and manager John Stainton recalls Irwin asking his fellow Aussie to play him if there was ever a film about his life.

Stainton says, "He (Irwin) raced up to him on the red carpet and said 'Eric, you have to promise me one thing, mate - you've got to play me when I die.'

"If we ever do a movie I'd have to get Eric Bana."

Irwin's pal Russell Crowe was the first name mentioned in relation to a biopic.

He immediately played down the rumours, stating, "It's appalling to me and offends me very deeply. It's so awful that I have to deal with millions of people thinking I would dance on my friend's grave."

American comedian Bill Maher has angrily refused to apologise for wearing a bloody Steve Irwin Halloween costume.

Maher, speaking on his US TV talkshow tonight, suggested Irwin may have been "doing something" to the stingray that killed him that he "shouldn't have been".

Photographs of Maher in his Crocodile Hunter costume, complete with a bloody stingray barb hanging out of his chest, appeared on the internet earlier in the week.

"Stop hassling me about my Halloween costume," Maher, speaking on his TV show, Real Time with Bill Maher, said.

"Yes, you've seen it on the internet. I went as the Crocodile Hunter with a bloody stinger in my chest."

Maher joked that he wouldn't apologise the way former Democrat US presidential candidate John Kerry this week apologised for a joke that backfired about US soldiers in Iraq.

"People who really love animals understand if you get killed by one, chances are you were doing something to it you shouldn't have been," Maher said.

"You want me to apologise for making a joke?

"Who do you think I am, John Kerry?"

The bad taste Crocodile Hunter costumes were popular in the US this Halloween, outraging Irwin's Australian and American fans.

Irwin was killed by a stingray barb while filming on the Great Barrier Reef on September 4.

South Park's creators have provoked outrage by sending Steve Irwin to hell in the latest episode of the cartoon.

In the show, the animated Irwin goes to a 'Hell on Earth' party with a stingray sticking out of his bleeding chest.

Hundreds of guests turn up at the party dressed as dead celebrities including Princess Diana, the rapper Notorious B.I.G. and Hitler. But Satan receives complaints from his guests that someone is inappropriately dressed up as Steve Irwin.

The devil confronts the Australian TV presenter and asks him to leave but Irwin insists he is not dressed up and it really is him - come back from the dead. Eventually Satan believes him but he is kicked out anyway - because he is not in fancy dress.

A spokesman told London's Metro newspaper: "South Park has been pushing people's buttons for more than 10 years. It has offended people in the past and probably will again. Regular watchers would not be shocked."

John Beyer, director of media watchdog Mediawatch, told the newspaper that the episode was "grossly insensitive".

"I think this is in bad taste... Steve Irwin's family are still grieving and I am sure they will be grieving for a long time. To lampoon somebody's death like that is unacceptable and so soon after the event is grossly insensitive."

De tal palo, tal astilla. Bindi Irwin, la hija de ocho años del desaparecido Cazador de cocodrilos, Steve Irwin, protagonizará su propia serie de documentales en el canal Discovery Kids. El programa, que se estrenará a principios del año que viene, se llamará Bindi, la niña de la jungla.

Antes de que el naturalista australiano muriera por la picadura de una raya, Discovery Kids estaba trabajando en un programa protagonizado por él y su hija.

He built a hospital to help animals and he bought lots of land to give animals a safe place to live. He took me and my brother and my mum with him all the time. We filmed together, caught crocodiles together and loved being in the bush together.

I don’t want daddy’s passion to ever end. I want to help endangered wildlife just like he did. I have the best daddy in the whole world and I will miss him every day.

When I see a crocodile I will always think of him and I know that daddy made this zoo so everyone could come and learn to love all the animals. Daddy made this place his whole life and now it’s our turn to help daddy.

Steve Irwin's Memorial Service to Air on Animal Planet

'Crocodile Hunter' Steve Irwin's eight-year-old daughter last night (14.09.06) vowed to copy her father and swim with stingrays.

Brave Bindi even said she will film the same giant fish who killed her father when she presents her own wildlife TV show 'Jungle Girl', scheduled to air in January.

Steve, 44, died tragically last week when a stingray's poisoned barb pierced his heart while he was filming a documentary at Australia's Great Barrier Reef.

It was thought Bindi's show would be axed following his death but she wants to carry on her father's conservation and TV work.

Steve's manager John Stainton revealed the naturalist only decided to film the stingray that killed him on the spur of the moment, so his daughter could see it.

He had been shooting scenes for his own new show 'Ocean's Deadliest' but suddenly decided to look for stingrays, which are known as the 'pussycats of the sea'.

John said: "It should have been an innocent encounter for a TV show aimed at children. Bindi's new series is going to premiere next January throughout the world.

"Steve was an integral part of that programme. We will do him proud and continue that effort."

Meanwhile, Steve's mother-in-law, Julie Raines, has revealed that Bindi, her two-year-old brother Robert, referred to by the wildlife expert as Bob, and his widow Terri have been left devastated by his untimely death.

Julie said: "Robert says, 'Where's daddy?' But Bindi's been a rock. It's just a very hard time."

Sydney (Australia).(EFE).- Cientos de ciudadanos australianos manifestaron hoy su pesar por la muerte del "cazador de cocodrilos" y estrella de la televisión Steve Irwin, que murió ayer a consecuencia de la picadura de una raya de aguijón cuando buceaba.

El productor John Stainton, amigo del famoso "cazador de cocodrilos", señala en un comunicado de prensa que la muerte de Irwin fue captada por las cámaras que le filmaban para un documental cuando fue atacado. "Vi las imágenes y son espantosas, muy duras de ver porque es un testimonio de una muerte, y es terrible. Se ve como Steve está encima de la raya y el aguijón sale y le pica aquí (en el pecho), y lo saca él mismo y luego pierde el conocimiento", declaró Stainton.

El primer ministro del país, John Howard, manifestó ante el Parlamento que Irwin murió "en circunstancias extrañas, trágicas y de alguna forma típicamente australiana, que han sorprendido y espeluznado a los australianos y han dado lugar a un flujo de tristeza y de emociones hacia este hombre popular en el mundo entero".
