In Karate's decade of performing and recording they refined their sound to a streamlined rock hybrid that was hard to pin down, and they slowly but surely forged a unique sonic identity that was all their own. The band's beginnings in the early-90's Boston indie scene, their love for improvised music and classic rock, and their adherence to the DIY punk ethos of their youth made them freaks in any scene, defying classification with their strange fusion of punk, blues, jazz and rock. 595 shows after Karate first stepped on stage together, Geoff Farina, Jeff Goddard and Gavin McCarthy sadly ended their 12-year run in the summer of 2005.

Maria Eriksson is Santa Maria. She is mostly known as guitar player, singer and songwriter in the Swedish popconstellations The Concretes and Heikki. Even though the forthcoming Santa Maria album is crammed with brilliant pop songs, the musical content is not very related to the pop music of The Concretes. Santa Maria is significantly more multi-faceted; she mixes intricate singer/songwriter-tunes with deeply progressive pieces, intelligent and distinctive dance anthems with stunningly beautiful tracks.

The musicians involved in Santa Maria are some of the most creative and sharp Sweden has to offer. Bass player, as well as the producer of the album, is Johan Berthling. Besides being a member of the internationally acclaimed electronica-act Tape, he also plays with artists like Nicolai Dunger, Tenniscoats and Bill Wells. On guitar, keyboard and vocals we find the frontman of Laakso, Markus Krunegård. And on drums another member of Laakso, Lars Skoglund. He also plays with Moneybrother - and is rightfully considered to be the greatest talent of the new generation. Also featured on the album are guest performers like: The Tiny-members Ellekari Larsson (vocals) and Leo Svensson (vocals), Anna Maria Espinosa (vocals), Sara Wilson (vocals) and Eric Malmberg of Sagor & Swing fame (organ).

The Heavy es como mezclar Stooges y Curtis Mayfield, o desordenar los archivos de la Stax y de Elektra...pero no tan buenos, claro. Además, hay casi plagios (Spencer Davis, Rolling Stones,...incluso el riff del single del último cd de Muse!), pero son divertidos. Estuvieron en Les Transmusicales de Rennes, y estaran en el SXSW 2008 (y deberian estar en el Azkena Rock...si es que el festival no muere, que andaba malito ya este último año)

Ya que sale aquí, simplemente quiero preguntar: ¿Soy el único al que el Soft Pow'r de Little Wings le parece muy poco folkie? Folk americano al uso, quiero decir. Por las voces, por las melodías, por el tono e incluso por el acompañamiento me parece bastante soul. Yo lo calificaría de soul lo-fi tocado á la slowcore si se me permite tal engendro, una vez se me ha permitido inaugurar esta reflexión tonta acerca de las tontas etiquetas. Tampoco espero muchas adhesiones, no se crean.

yo diría que está al-fi-lo del folk con un suave punto de soulcore. Pero tampoco me hagas mucho caso que no lo he escuchado.

esto es post-rock que tira al jazz, rollo Tortoise, Chicago Underground Trio o la Exploding Star Orchestra. con el doble de arrojo que todos ésos (también shining con la mitad) y los discos de King Crimson aprendidos de memoria. de una pericia instrumental de alucinar.
