David Grubbs - An Optimist Notes the Dusk [2008/Drag City]

It's been a good old while since David Grubbs last unleashed a solo album on his public. 2004's A Guess At The Riddle was the Gastr Del Sol star's most recent full-length as an entity in his own right, although since then he's notably collaborated with cellist Nikos Veliotis and guested on a number of recordings by other artists and compilations like room40's brilliant Airport Symphony set. An Optimist Notes The Dusk is for the most part a pronounced return to songwriting, and despite the occasional presence of drums and even a smattering of trumpet the album takes on the very solitary sound, largely confined to one man's voice and guitar. 'Gethsemani Night' extols the power of this setup very well. Grubbs' electric guitar goes beyond the role usually assigned by singer-songwriter formats. This sounds much freer and unrooted, drifting in a broken, melancholic fashion with occasional, submerged brass accompaniment. 'Holy Fool Music' marks the first instance of a 'full band' sound on the album, rocking out much like a slightly deformed Sonic Youth record before dissolving into something a little more pensive. The gentle guitar meditations on 'Storm Sequence' and 'Eyeglasses Of Kentucky' remind you that Grubbs has been known to fraternise with Loren Connors, evoking that more abstract side to Grubbs' work that's never too far from the surface before finally succumbing to it entirely on 'The Not So Distant', a twelve minute drone piece that sounds as lonely and as introspective as the tone harnessed on earlier tracks. Highly recommended.

Fue hace más de un año creo, se me da muy mal recordar fechas. Fuímos a varias escuelas del tío de Alba a grabar los pianos y las guitarras. Nos inventamos una especie de mini-habitación dentro de un cuarto grande con unos sillones para aislar las tomas de Aleix y siempre teníamos un micro de ambiente para conseguir reverbs naturales.

Library Tapes - A Summer Beneath The Trees

A Summer Beneath the Trees is still pretty ascetic, but by Wenngren's usual standards, it's practically Wagner. A lot of the credit for this newfound mass is due to Peter Broderick (who also played on the superlative Fragment EP), a young musician from Portland who worked as a session man with M. Ward, Zooey Deschanel, and others, before moving to Copenhagen to join Efterklang. Here, Broderick complements Wenngren's piano with a wide variety of accompaniment: violin, guitar, accordion, trumpet, celesta, viola, and banjo. Höstluft and Fragment were almost accidental music– like walking by a house and catching a couple minutes of someone picking out a melody on a beat-up old upright inside. This is the fullest, most finished-sounding Library Tapes project since it was an official duo (with Per Jardsell), and may suit listeners who need more than a few endlessly revolving piano notes better than recent offerings. For fans of Max Richter, Tim Hecker, and Eluvium, A Summer Beneath the Tress is a can't-miss album.
