high wolf / kairos: chronos (not not fun, 2013)

@2dly33v8:
French globe-tourist High Wolf has hand-rolled his way up Mount Fuji, trainspotted every corner of Europe, hitchhiked across America and Australia, chugged Ganges water, and crouched on all manner of smoke-stained prayer rug since first looping a bongo back in '09. His apprenticeship in the House of Wah nearly complete, he's hinted at a potentially seismic shift in the High Wolf third eye doctrine lurking in the near future; perhaps his Away Team exfoliation moment is nigh. Fortunately, Not Not Fun has coaxed the astral jungle jah concoctions of Kairos: Chronos out from the ether, because this LP is the summation of his entire half-decade Amazon Cosmos quest.
All the tenets of the High Wolf mythology are in place: humid hand-percussion heat-spells, coiling snake-charmer fuzz-guitar stacked six deep, sunlit synth textures, dubby bass-lines thumping through grass amps, ceremonial voodoo babble, etc. From the hidden temple hymn "Kulti" to the thirteen-minute self-beheading solar eclipse shakedown, "Alvarado", the record represents rarified proof of The Wolf on High.

julianna barwick / nepenthe (dead oceans, 2013)

@3cqahkh3:
Julianna Barwick named her forthcoming release Nepenthe, after a drug in Greek mythology that erased all memory of grief and sorrow. While Barwick was recording the album in Iceland, a family member passed away, and the name just sorta presented itself. The music on the album springs from that sense of moving from loss to hope, from pain to transcendence. And the story of Nepenthe’s birth is pretty much a Greek mythology-level tale itself… well, if your pantheon of gods includes Sigur Rós and instead of a quest for a gold fleece, your quest is to record an awesome new album.
It all began when Barwick received an email from artist and producer Alex Somers (Sigur Rós, Jónsi, Jónsi & Alex) inviting her to Reykjavík to record. “That was the fastest email I ever wrote: ‘Yes!’ Who would say no to that?” says Barwick. And so a dream team of Icelandic musicians was assembled, including múm guitarist Róbert Sturla Reynisson, string ensemble Amiina, and a chorus of teenage girls. The biggest inspiration for the album, however, was the total awesome weirdness of Iceland itself. Take it away, Julianna Barwick quote! “Your eyes can’t believe what they’re seeing. I walked home one night and got totally lost in Reykjavík. I ended up walking alongside the ocean — and it was glowing blue. It looked like it had a lamp underneath it.”

deep magic / reflections of most forgotten love (preservation, 2013)

@3cqahkh3:
Reflections of Most Forgotten Love is the third album from Los Angeles’ Deep Magic.
The solo project for current Sun Araw live band member Alex Gray, Deep Magic’s work has tended towards a meditative ambient realm, crafting a cosmic sound described by Uncut as having ‘a sort of calm and organic grandeur that recalls Popol Vuh’. Indeed like Popol Vuh, pursuit of a kind of spiritual grace has proven to be the measure at the heart of Deep Magic. Reflections of Most Forgotten Love finds a new urgency, an ever-shifting puzzle of sound breathing vital new life into Gray’s lyrical vision.
Dynamic and unrelenting yet somehow beautifully spacious and patient in its unfolding, this epic work thrives on equal parts pulse and poise, an essence held within a thrilling multiplicity of ideas.
Skittish techno, rolling pianos, warm pedal steel, foggy, dub drifts and microscopic sonics play out a hypnotic movement of moods with magnetic compulsion. Throughout its stirring, blissful way, intimacy is its keynote. As the title suggests, this is an album of emotively raw presence with a singular take on solitude as a many splendoured thing.

explosiones solares, nebulosas fantasmales, galaxias milenarias… este me lo llevo un dia al planetario. seguro que a carl sagan le encantaria.
por cierto, vaya cachondeo los titulos de los temas: alone in her cave, i've been thinking, she can feel my sadness…

@-Toxinho-:1pc5bwqz:
roedelius schneider / tiden (bureau-b, 2013)

@1pc5bwqz:
Not long after Hans-Joachim Roedelius (Cluster, Harmonia) and Stefan Schneider (To Rococo Rot, Kreidler, Mapstation) had released their first album "Stunden", accompanied by a few live shows in 2011, Eric Satie and Brian Eno were quoted as the great inspiration for their musical collaboration. Fine references no doubt, one having invented musique d'ameublement, and the other having refined it into ambient music 80 years later. Yet "Tiden" does not sit easily in either camp. This is neither tasteful decor (à la Satie), nor is it electronic-auditory space filler (à la Eno), gazing towards infinity. The short duration of the 13 pieces is enough to discount either genre. Better to consider these as concentrated, inspired études, carefully thought through and in no way random or sketchy.

stara rzeka / cień chmury nad ukrytym polem (instant classic, 2013)

@1n4qwuhb:
Stara Rzeka is not mere genre-mashing. The long-form pieces on Cien chmury nad ukrytym polem glide from Americana compositions to beat electronics to black metal are executed with so much sprezzatura that they place their importance not on the genres themselves, but on the shared atmospheric qualities related within. In some form of miracle of execution, the intense transitions feel natural and somehow make sense of their opposites. But by the end of the album, even this point feels like a distraction for what’s happening here. Like the person interacting with nature, understanding the juxtapositions in context misses the point — or, as the writer Clara Lispector said about the egg, “To understand is proof of error.” So maybe this is why I am so attracted to it: my unfamiliarity, complete ignorance of the Polish language, my weak understanding of black metal, my non-existent encyclopedia on modern electronic music, or that drawing history to Fahey, circuits, and corpse paint seems useless — again, like the person interacting with nature. –RIBOFLAVIN (tinymixtapes)

bitchin bajas / bitchitronics (drag city, 2013)

@2pfpy822:
Bitchin Bajas are back. Their new album, ‘Bitchitronics’, is ready with the quickness expected from the Chi-based duo. They make slow music at a fast pace.
Since their first appearance way back in 2010, Bitchin Bajas’ approach has been simple - unfold tones via synth and keyboard, allowing micro-frequencies to press against each other in a way that pleases the ear, the mind and the soul. That’s part of the fun of being Bitchin Bajas, getting into and off on the circuits and signal paths and waveforms. From record to record (three albums, two split singles, a cassette, and a 12” EP), their process is redefined by confronting the technologies of formative and outmoded machines, which slides the Bajas’ sound into different quadrants of the ambient / post-organic / electronic / drone universe each time around.

okkyung lee / ghil (emego, 2013)

@1oqmx7bm:
A native of Korea, cellist/composer Okkyung Lee has been developing her unique voice in both improvised and composed music by blending her wide interests and influences. Since moving to New York in 2000, she has worked with numerous artists ranging from Laurie Anderson, David Behrman, Douglas Gordon, Vijay Iyer, Christian Marclay, Jim O’Rourke, Evan Parker and John Zorn just to name a few, while leading her own projects and releasing more than 20 albums and touring extensively in the US and Europe. Okkyung was a recipient of Foundation for Contemporary Arts Grant in 2010.
Ghil was recorded and produced by the Norwegian artist Lasse Marhaug. Instead of recording in what has become the standard in modern contempoary music, with high-end equipment and in controlled studio settings, Marhaug wanted to record Ghil in an expressionistic way – to purposely use crude equipment and unorthodox microphone placement in order to give a more raw and direct depiction of Okkyung playing her music. Marhaug says if it they were making a film, it would be like shooting on grainy 16mm black&white with close-ups instead of 35mm colour cinemascope.
