The follow-up to 2008’s Khora, Fragments Of The Marble Plan adds a slightly more electronic carapace to Aufgehoben’s cataclysmic noise-rock foundation. The prevailing sound here evokes the Mego label before it added “Editions” to its name and became enamored of American guitar mavericks, back when it purveyed cyclotronic, abstract electronic music that had the centrifugal force of an irrefutable PhD thesis.
Such is the overwhelming power of Aufgehoben on this, the British group’s sixth album, that even exposure to the MP3s of its songs makes one relieved to have health insurance. Music this apocalyptic has few peers, but some approximate touchstones might be the most radically “out” and knotty moments of Norwegian post-jazz ensemble Supersilent, This Heat after realizing that Brise-Glace didn’t pay them a penny in royalties, or Farmers Manual after extensive immersion in Mainliner’s back catalog. Fragments Of The Marble Plan is a terrifying force of nature, a Rube Goldberg machine run amok, the sound of civilization atomizing into controlled chaos. It’s so cold, it’s hellish. Although Aufgehoben feel your need for catharsis, they convince you that being ready to jump out of your skin is the new normal.
If Aufgehoben dealt in clichés (which they don’t), we would say that they take no prisoners on Fragments Of The Marble Plan. This music is war—with all of the fascinating horrors and grisly casualties inherent in that endeavor. Get a helmet.

Shary Boyle did live drawings on overhead projectors. It was an excellent collaboration and the fruits can be heard on the second LP’s side C. Maailmankaari I and II were recorded in Boston at the WMBR radio station. > Side D finishes of the trilogy with two songs composed as early as 2002\. I’ve recorded the first song Universaali totuus at least five or six times. This version was recorded in June of 2005 just before sending it to pressing. Pianokaari was mutilated, cut and changed for three years. These two songs span the whole duration of the recording and creation of this double album. > All this time Juri Puhakka was working on the drawings on the sleeves. Featured on the cover is me with rainbows ponting directly at my hands. It represents hope for understanding dreams are within ones grasp. Other musicians featured on the covers are Suvi Mäkinen who has been a part of the Es live line-up many times. Jan Anderzen and I have collaborated on so many occasions that the facts get blurred. Elissa Määttänen has appeared on all but the first album and continues to contribute her vocals to Es live shows as well as the recorded releases. Other musicians on the album are Jeffrey Alexander and Miriam Goldberg from the Black Forest / Black Sea duo and Laura Naukkarinen (aka. Lau Nau). @1172m25q:On their Thrill Jockey debut Occupied with the Unspoken, Golden Retriever create polyphonic music from monophonic instruments. The bass clarinet and the analog modular synthesizer are generally both capable of playing only one note at a time. Starting from this point of pure melody, Golden Retriever then find ways to turn melody into harmony using their “boring old one-note instruments” to make live electronic music that is remarkably rich in textural details and almost symphonic in its use of layering. Though the music is often classified as experimental, its most salient feature is melody. It is made remarkable by the ease at which it takes the disparate elements of minimalism, free jazz, noise, classical, and even pop and shapes it all into something emotionally compelling.

in december 2011, chilly gonzales moved his piano into paris' studio pigalle. there, alone for 10 days, he recorded a handful of songs that had made the short list from a hundred or so melodies written over the eight years that had passed since the release of the now iconic solo piano. the self-proclaimed musical genius has traveled quite a road to 'solo piano ii'. producing grammy-nominated albums and breaking a guinness world record jump-started a period during which chilly gonzales returned to the stage after several years behind a studio console working for others. with his own albums and supporting tours, chilly drew attention to his versatility as a performer and to his virtuosity as a pianist. rare is the artist that can make people dance to the trendiest electronic beats and then turn a symphonic orchestra into a back-up band for a rap concert. at the same time, chilly became the 'go to guy' for piano compositions with drake, feist, daft punk and even the late steve jobs, all calling upon him. but that was then, and 'solo piano ii' is now. indeed, it is the mark of a true entertainer to recognize that time when the greatest respect one can show his fans, is, as chilly himself noted on his 2011 release the unspeakable chilly gonzales, to simply 'shut up and play the piano.'
