Dara Puspita - The Garage Years LP [2010/Groovie]

Dara Puspita (trans. "Flower Girls") was arguably the world's greatest all-female garage rock band. The reason you've probably never heard of them is that they came from Indonesia where they were extremely popular during the 1960s. Their career spanned from 1965 until 1973 including 3 years (1969-1971) living and touring in Europe. The four albums recorded by the original members between 1966 and 1968 (the material represented on this LP) is one of the great chapters of 1960s popular music history never to be reissued in vinyl, let alone recognized beyond a few tuned-in souls and adventurous record collectors in the Western world. This is an amazing compilation for all garage rockers, fuelled with fuzz tunes and groovy rhythms.
After a couple fantastic cd reissues on Sublime Frequencies, of this incredible Indonesian sixties all girl garage rock group, a handful of those tracks have been gathered up and released on vinyl! Pricey import, but still quite cool…
We first heard about these Indonesian girl group garage rockers when three of their records were reissued on Chicago label PlusTapes, we all went nuts for them, as did the aQ legions, we couldn't keep them in stock, but sadly they were crazy limited. Even at the time, and even on tape, we wanted to make one or all of them Records Of The Week, but they disappeared before we had a chance. So when Sublime Frequencies swooped in and reissued on a compact disc all three of Dara Puspita's records proper (all the stuff on the cassettes, and then some!), we got to gush like crazy and indeed bestow Record Of The Week honors on these amazing ladies and their incredible music. And now, for those of you who were holding out for something on vinyl...
Dara Puspita (Flower Girls in English) were Indonesia's most successful girl group in the sixties, and one of the few -actual- bands, who played their own instruments as opposed to just singing with all male backing bands. Even though rock and roll was banned at the time, with some bands being jailed for performing rock music live (Koes Bersaudara in particular, whose Sublime Frequencies discs we reviewed a while back - Dara Puspita and Koes Bersaudara had very similar histories, their careers often directly influenced by each other). Dara Puspita took their influence from that banned rock music, borrowing liberally from the Rolling Stones, The Beatles (whose songs they were warned by the authority to not perform, the very songs that got Koes Bersaudara jailed!) and the like, but giving it their own twist.
Performing a mix of covers and originals, these ladies were legendary for their wild live shows, but they really shine on record, with a totally distinctive and keen pop sensibility, gorgeous lilting vocals, an awesome rhythm section and some really excellent guitar playing. Dara Puspita weren't avant garde or super far out, not really heavy or psychedelic, instead they were just a kick ass pop group, an awesome garagey rock and roll band, catchy and fun, super energetic and with a distinctly unique vibe that makes this sound so special. Here is this new CD. It’s not a proper “full length album” that will be promoted , toured, talked about, or even acknowledged as “interesting ” by me.
So far……I have been describing it to my friends as ” a bunch of shit”…..or “a reason to clean up my desktop”……or…..”something that better not be called my next fucking album because I really dont know if I like any of it”.
On the upside ….it has plenty of “Arm of Roger” moments , so those of you who are into “christian-Ween-meets Beavis and butthead meets David Lynch-Mob Gang….you might like some of it.
Actually …it was an attempt to salvage some old left overs and apply my appreciation for Ron Camerons artwork into the music. I must admit there are a few o.k. moments…..but it has absolutely nothing to do with what I am working on for the (my) next album.http://www.multiupload.com/IELMISND7T -

sacaron un buen primer disco, pero en el segundo se pusieron un poco espesos y la gente les perdió la rueda.

a mí me costó una escucha a las tres primeras canciones del disco, ¿o eran dos canciones?

a ver… ¿monoescuchismo o TQEM? este foro necesita un posicionamiento claro. que luego llegan los novatos y nos hacemos la picha un lío a la hora de crucificarlos.

Mi postura al respecto es que para saber que lo de Jason Lytle es una frikdada solo hace falta una escucha y leer sus propias palabras sobre el disco, en cambio desde que salió Untrue que lo llevo escuchando y cada vez le descubro cosas nuevas y cada vez lo valoro más, todo depende.
