A year after Drag City’s reissue of their soft-hued bedroom psych gem 'It’s Cozy Inside', the Woo revival continues with an Emotional Rescue reissue of their similarly slanted and enchanted 1982 debut, 'Whichever Way Your Are Going You Are Going Wrong'. You may previously have encountered it four of five years ago on Mutant Sounds, who proclaimed it “absolute unsung genius…uncanny and weirdly affecting”, and certainly weren’t wrong. Both the original private pressing on the band’s own Sunshine Series and the subsequent re-release on Savage Republic’s Independent Projects label are much sought after, but collector’s cache of this album is secondary to its musical value - it really is a classic. Working with acoustic guitars, clarinet, rhythm box, keyboards, singing bowls, pixiephone and subtle processing, this is gloriously DIY, melancholic, avant-garde pastoralism that connects the dots between Pentangle, Gareth Williams, Penguin Cafe Orchestra, Dif Juz and Robert Wyatt. From the cool summer breeze of opener, which sounds like a library-rock jam between Basil Kirchin and Vini Reilly, to the trippy, proto-techno drum ‘n Moog mantras of ‘Pokhara’ and ‘The Cleaner’, and mystic folk ruminations like ‘C.H. Revisited’ and ‘A Wave’, there isn’t a dull moment. The second half of the album goes deeper into dubwise Arcadian jazz, Mark Ives’ woozy treated woodwind taking centre-stage, and the one vocal cut, ‘The Attic’, is a stunning instance of wry, painterly, Eno-esque pop.

Muy bien traído Robert Wyatt en la entrada de manel. No ya por Eno al que también se nombra, si no por la melancolía que esconde. A mi me recuerdan a Stereolab, Arto Lindsay, al Camino del Sol de Antena, y ya tirándome a la piscina, a la música de Minas Gerais (Milton, Lô, Toninho Horta, Beto Guedes), en cuanto a melancolía, quede claro. Una melancolía placentera y a la vez cargada de misterio.

Ultra late night and streetlit collab from two of Portland’s key electronic reinterpreters. These 60 minutes and 18 tracks are all fully live, born out of a couple of sessions fueled by kush, coffee and tonnes of LaCroix pink grapefruit Soda Water.
“Zirconia Reign” is an organic manifestation of imagery and psychic connection from their collective experiences living in Portland, working as civil servants for the more desolate and bleak suburban areas. Connecting the disparities between the urban/suburban divide in a place renowned as an “alt” mecca with a stack of synths, sequencers and drum-pads, dip into post-Internet oasis of signifiers fused in banality; video games, and electronic music of the past and present, a pioneer of the virtual/real consciousness reflected in our Cascadian utopae.
Morphing familiar but distant ideals from icy R&B, futuristic funk, and more recent rave/electronic domains, the singular experience of “Zirconia Reign” is post-ironic and bathed in reverence and high gloss simulation, honed in collective isolation by pervasive overcast weather.

From the get-go, Jónó Mí ló dives right into Eco Reject Mixtape. The mix begins on such an off-beat that the entirety of it is relentlessly uroboros’d with hit-the-ground-running samples while complementing a well played in middle-ground. It’s just constantly devouring itself. Whether the loop is harsh, lingering, or complete eternity, Jónó digs into the roots of sound while filtering in at least a million samples. And the unintelligible vibe of “Is that someone’s voice” to “Yo, that’s Lana Del and Fergie” comes down to the album art. Intentionally so, I believe the image adorning the j-card of Eco Reject Mixtape is the exact interpretation of how Jónó thinks, currently.
