[Have you ever wondered how much oil and energy it takes to make a CD, and how long it will live in a landfill…?] Anyway, I digress - back to PR folks - they also send me hyperbolic blurbs about their bands. The one that accompanied the fascinating new album from Portland’s AU is an example:

Between these disparate bookends lies the staggering aesthetic expanse of Verbs-the sophomore record from acclaimed Portland, OR. experimental pop collective Au-which, in its swirling depths and subtleties, promises to be one of this year’s most satisfying surprises.

And that was just the opening paragraph. These expansive rants are rarely helpful in giving me a sense of what to expect; they inevitably never match up to my listening experience - let’s just paraphrase ‘beauty lies in the eye of the beholder’ into the ‘ear of the listener.’

With Verbs, Luke Wyland, the architect behind AU has managed to wrangle a rather wondrous and vast sonic landscape of an album into a cohesive musical shape and form using multiple instruments while collaborating with multiple musicians, many of whom if not all are from Portland, Oregon. I dare say that when Wyland released the debut AU album last year the comparisons to Arnold Dreyblatt, Animal Collective, Terry Riley, Steve Reich and Grizzly Bear may have been correct

This release was promptly followed up by a CD only remix project on Moteer featuring mixes by Bracken, Epic 45, and The Boats amongst others and a their debut full length CD Goodbye Minnesota is released by Ireland’s Rusted Rail imprint in May 2008

Insisto en lo que ha dicho Pelukini: poner un enlace sirve para que mucha gente descubra al grupo (un amplio porcentaje de ella JAMÁS lo hubiera hecho de otra forma), y lo tenga en cuenta a la hora de comprarse un disco, ir a un concierto, contratarlos, … La competencia es durísima en calidad y, sobre todo, cantidad, así que si el público ha de escoger es un suicidio negarle una primera y mísera cata, no juegas en igualdad de condiciones que el resto.

three second kiss son buenísimos, y chevreuil también, pero muy difícil será que me vuelva a comprar un disco de alguno de ellos si antes no lo escucho

se nota que son muy jóvenes, pero la cosa promete bastante.

Increíble lo del mensaje privado este. Para mí que el notas no debe ser uno de los músicos del grupo sino algun pavo del sello demasiado bien acostumbrado a los buenos tiempos (los suyos). Dudo que haya algun músico 'indie' que a dia de hoy no se haya dado cuenta de lo bueno que es para ellos que sus discos circulen de ésta manera por internet.

Envíale un privado con el link de la pagina de downliners sekt y que se lea el FAQ. A ver si de una puta vez la gente se entera que aquí los que perjudican a la música y a la cultura no somos nosotros.

Permítidme insistir sobre este FAQ pero es que es una puta biblia de como ver las cosas de manera coherente. Ojalá todo el mundo hiciera lo mismo.

Ya que estamos, me ha decepcionado en primera escucha y mucho. Parece un disco housero para ir a la playa, con algunos ruiditos y samplers para darle un aire alternativo. No sé, repasaré las demos porque este tio prometía y estos temas nuevos son bastante descartables.

Esos epic45 ahí triunfando! A ver si hay suerte y caen en el Tanned tin este año.

Estoy escuchando el disco y bueno… ninguna sorpresa, no puede negar este hombre de donde viene, además hay otro ex-miembro implicado. Suena a los Hood menos pop, pero a Hood.

Strategy - Electric Soup [2008]

As one of the few artists in the world that can truly sidestep any generic classifications or impositions we have a great deal of respect for Paul Dickow aka Strategy round these parts. Last years 'future rock' album for Kranky was the overlooked and underrated companion to Panda Bear's world beating 'person Pitch' LP, for it's like minded exploration of lush and dense avant-pop exploration informed by classic electronics and techno soul in a style and fashion quite unlike any of his peers. And so we arrive at Dickows first new material for 2008, and on 'Electric soup' he drops any ambitions or references to dance music and instead embarks on deeply involving manouevres on 'Unconventional wisdom', a krautrock inspired gem of a track wrapped snugly inside Strategy's wonderfully esoteric and wooly headspace. 'Wurlitzer tapeloop' takes a cue from William Basinski with a degraded tapeloop experimentation allowed to drift deliciously off centre for the tracks duration, in the process coming across Boards Of Canada styled wisps of melancholy sonic detritus and placing the listener exactly where they want to be, this is a pretty special track. Spread thick and lazy over the B-side is this 12"s centrepiece, the woozy dub cut of 'primordial soup', a just-out-of-focus dub experiment baffled by it's own haziness and simply allowed to wander in the finest organic and intuitive style his imagination will allow. Awesome.
