The Boats - Faulty Toned Radio [2008/Flau]
@4kjdgtrd:
Japanese label Flau have lured Andrew Hargreaves and Craig Tattersall away from their traditional home on Moteer for a brand new album of unclassifiable electronic and acoustic song fragments. The jokey song titles almost seem like a distraction, as if The Boats are trying to distance themselves from how honestly sentimental and unwaveringly lovely their music is. Of course, titles like 'Get Folk Outta My Face' really doesn't reflect the tone of the music's achingly beautiful content, and certainly by the time you arrive at the chiming glockenspiel tones and shuffling scratchy beats of 'It's Not A Folk, It's A Knife', the punning stretches some way beyond the absurd, and the veil of humour can't obscure the intricately crafted warmth of these compositions. While genre classifications have never applied to The Boats' melodious electronic discharges, there are certain points of Faulty Toned Radio where you can hear the beats bulking up, and making strides towards the dancefloor (albeit a very quiet dancefloor) on 'Cars, Bikes, Boats, Babes', which combines the plaintive, unassuming electronic hum that underpins so much of the duo's work and imposes a folksy 4/4 micro-house template. It's a gorgeously direct piece of music from a band who've previously made their very own language out of low-key, headphone-friendly electronics. That's not the only example of this either: counterbalancing the bitcrushed piano outings like 'This Is For You To Read' you'll encounter playful acid-influenced basslines on 'Hemihorn' and tuneful, uptempo music on 'As For Substance'. In any case, all these pieces remain staunchly within The Boats' distinctive idiom, but their vocabulary just got that little bit broader. Gorgeous music - Highly recommended.

The Music Tapes - Music Tapes For Clouds and Tornadoes

@22v24s8u:
“This album spotlights Julian Koster’s (Neutral Milk Hotel, Chocolate USA) songcraft and distinctive vocals, his almost religious devotion to the singing saw, and numerous contributions from other musicians in the Elephant 6 orbit. As on previous efforts, recording was done using an array of antique hardware, giving the record a timeless, texturally rich sonic palette.”

Yo diría que "Spectrum" no hace referencia a una banda o artista, sino es mera parte del nombre del EP. Que, por cierto, suena de maravilla. Nuevamente las gracias, Toxi-man

Gracias por acordarte de lo de The Music Tapes!

Giuseppe Ielasi - Stunt [2008/Schoolmap]
@13girs1a:
'Stunt' is the first in a series of three vinyl EPs which represent an interesting stylistic departure from Ielasi’s previous work. The series is focused on the use of one turntable and a large selection of vinyl records as sources for raw material, and pulses/rhythm as main organizational principle. The basic sound material, in the form of short segments and loops or longer and more complex improvisations, was collected over the course of three months, using techniques influenced more by “turntablism”, than traditional sampling or plunderphonics. The raw sequences have then been edited and assembled in 6 tracks (more to follow…), whose structures are probably closer to house music productions than to Ielasi’s more atmospheric and layered compositions from his earlier releases.
Stunt was mastered and cut by Rashad Becker at Dubplates & Mastering. Full color cover photo by Italian artist Amedeo Martegani.

helena espvall and masaki batoh - helena espvall and masaki batoh
@1012s7q0:
Originally planned as a set of improvisations, this album by Espers cellist Helena Espvall and Ghost's Masaki Batoh evolved into a project that combined free, instant composition with reinterpretations of traditional Scandinavian folk songs and brand new compositions. There's a very liberated feel to the formatting of the album, with Espvall not only taking up cello, but often singing in her native Swedish, occasionally playing guitar and banjo too. Masaki Batoh mans the electric guitar, and generally fills in the blanks left by Espvall, occasionally stepping up to the mic himself, as on the excellent 'Zeranium' and the duo's particularly bizarre rendering of Son House's classic Delta blues, 'Death Letter', which is turned into some sort of medievalised psych jam complete with bizarre '70s-style vocal effects. The scattershot nature of the project prevents it from taking on a concentrated, conventional album narrative, but these two musicians are unfailing in their delivery of artfully rendered, experimental song.
