A pair of sneakers inspired by Joy Division are set for production, it has been confirmed.

The manufacturer, New Balance, is awaiting final clearance on making the shoes, which are based on the artwork to the band's landmark 1979 album Unknown Pleasures.

The sneakers feature the distinctive ripples on the sole and tongue and are embossed with the catalogue number Fact 10, after Joy Division's seminal record label, Factory Records.

American artist Dylan Adair has designed the sneakers, which, if released, will coincide with a new film based around the life of Joy Division singer Ian Curtis.

The premiere of Control, directed by Anton Corbijn, received a rapturous critical reception at the Cannes Film Festival last month

TEL AVIV: About 15 Japanese tourists involuntarily spent the night in an Israeli settlement in the West Bank because they were unable to pronounce the letter "L", the Israeli daily Maariv reported yesterday.

The tour group were on an excursion to Afula. But when they were buying bus tickets in Jerusalem, they pronounced the letter "L" like the letter "R", and were accidentally given tickets for the Ofra settlement.

When they arrived at the high-security entrance to the settlement, the puzzled guard tried to explain that there was no "nearby hotel" in the crisis-torn region. After long explanations and a day later, the tourists took a bus to their original destination. - Sapa-dpa

TOKYO - A glittering bathtub made of gold worth nearly $1 million has been stolen from a resort hotel, an official said Wednesday.

A worker at Kominato Hotel Mikazuki in Kamogawa, south of Tokyo, notified police that the fancy tub was missing from the hotel’s guest bathroom on the 10th floor, according to a local police official who only gave his surname, Ogawa.

The round tub, worth $987,000, is made of 18-karat gold and weighs 176 pounds.

The tub, flanked by two crane statues, has been a main feature of the hotel’s shared bathroom. Visitors can take a dip in the tub, but it is only available a few hours a day “for security reasons,” the hotel’s Web site said.
Someone apparently cut the chain attached to the door of a small section of the bathroom where the bathtub was placed, but not riveted, and made off with the tub, Ogawa said.

“We have no witness information and there are no video cameras,” he said. “We have no idea who took it,” the official said.
