Black Sabbath, Blondie Enter Rock & Roll Hall of Fame

The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame Museum's permanent collection is in Cleveland, Ohio.NEW YORK - Between an ugly feud among Blondie members spilling over onstage and a rancorous letter from the absent Sex Pistols, the latest Rock and Roll Hall of Fame class did not enter quietly on Monday.
The animosity even made Ozzy Osbourne, inducted with Black Sabbath, seem sedate.
As midnight arrived under the chandeliers of the Waldorf-Astoria’s grand ballroom, Lynyrd Skynyrd was performing the song that launched countless cigarette lighters, “Free Bird,” to celebrate their own induction. Famed jazz trumpeter Miles Davis completed the honorees.
When Blondie, the most commercially successful band to emerge from a fertile New York rock scene that also produced Talking Heads and the Ramones, reformed after 15 years, they didn’t include former members Frank Infante and Nigel Harrison. They sued unsuccessfully to join.
Infante, Harrison and Gary Valentine, another former member left behind in a business dispute, were barely acknowledged by former chums Deborah Harry, Chris Stein and Clem Burke as they received their awards.
Infante begged to perform with the band.
“Debbie, are we allowed?” he pleaded before Blondie performed their hits “Heart of Glass,” “Rapture” and “Call Me.”
“Can’t you see my band is up there?” Harry replied. The three rejected members walked offstage, but not before Infante groaned into the microphone.
Punk rockers the Sex Pistols had turned down the honor in a profane letter that compared the hall to “urine in wine.” Rolling Stone magazine founder Jann Wenner read the letter, and invited the band to pick up their trophies at the rock hall in Cleveland.
“If they want to smash them into bits, they can do that, too,” Wenner said.
Behind the unnerving stare of singer Johnny Rotten and the lacerating lyrics of “God Save the Queen” and “Pretty Vacant,” the Sex Pistols appeared the most shocking of the first punk-rock generation in the mid-1970s. The Pistols imploded after one album, with Rotten saying, “ever get the feeling you’ve been cheated?” before walking offstage after their last show for decades.
Celebrating Sabbath
Osbourne may be better known now as an addled reality TV star, but his musical legacy with Black Sabbath got its due with the band’s induction.Osbourne has badmouthed the hall of fame for waiting a decade to induct Sabbath, a cause taken up by Metallica member Lars Ulrich in his induction. Metallica guitarist James Hetfield and Ulrich both said their band would not exist without the example of Black Sabbath.
“If there was no Black Sabbath, I could still possibly be a morning newspaper delivery boy,” Ulrich said. “No fun.”
Osbourne, Geezer Butler, Tony Iommi and Bill Ward did not perform, but Metallica rattled the walls with versions of “Iron Man” and “Hole in the Sky.”
“Thank you to all Sabbath fans everywhere,” Ward said. “Hopefully our induction tonight will add to the validation ... [and] hard rock and heavy metal will have an enduring and everlasting place in rock history.”
Osbourne thanked his wife, Sharon, who sat in the ballroom with their daughters Kelly and Aimee.
Davis was inducted by fellow jazz musician Herbie Hancock, who said the trumpeter often played with his back to the audience simply because he was conducting the band.
“He was a man of mystery, magic and mystique,” Hancock said. “It was often said he was an enigma. I would venture to say that many who said that just didn’t get it.”
Southern rockers Skynyrd, whose name was a deliberately misspelled “tribute” to a hated high-school teacher, made much of its memorable music before a 1977 plane crash killed singer Ronnie Van Zant and guitarist Steve Gaines.
“No one deserved to be here more than Ronnie Van Zant,” said his widow Judy, “and he would truly be honored.”
Johnny Van Zant, who replaced his brother as the lead singer, joined Kid Rock in a duet of the band’s hit “Sweet Home Alabama,” such a well-known prideful statement of Southern heritage that the title was later swiped for a Reese Witherspoon movie.
Each of the acts is still active. Blondie and the Sex Pistols reformed after long dormant periods, and so did Sabbath, who frequently headlined the popular Ozzfest summer concert tours.
The hall also is giving a lifetime achievement award to Herb Alpert and Jerry Moss, founders of the influential A&M Records label that bore their initials and signed artists like the Police, Supertramp, John Hiatt, Cat Stevens and Alpert’s band, the Tijuana Brass.
“I haven’t seen this many people since I played bar mitzvahs years ago,” said trumpeter Alpert.
Inductees are honored at the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame & Museum in Cleveland. Highlights of the 21st annual ceremony will be shown on VH1 on March 21.

When she sang about Respect for the first time in 1967, Aretha Franklin was a svelte brunette. Forty years on, she is almost unrecognisable.In a blonde wig, spilling out of a low-cut gown, a much larger Queen of Soul appeared at a gala dinner in Washington on Friday.
And Miss Franklin couldn't be happier. For the first time, she says, the real Aretha is on stage - a 'big woman' who loves her food.
The 63-year-old has revealed she spent decades starving herself to stay slim.
'For a long time I suffered so much trying to be what other people expected me to be and look like,' she told the Canyon News website.
'I definitely was never meant to be a model-type walking down a runway - I'm just Aretha singing what she feels in her heart and soul. So far, people seem to understand...'
The audience at the National Association of Black-Owned Broadcasters gala dinner certainly seemed satisfied, giving the mother of four a standing ovation.

Sex Pistols lead singer John Lydon says harassing fans, such as those who threw bottles at the band at a Danish music festival, are "the very people we hate the most."Lydon, known as Johnny Rotten in the iconic British '70s punk band, also panned animal activists and the anti-abortion movement during his appearance Friday on bandmate Steve Jones' radio show, called "Jonesy's Jukebox."
"We're Sex Pistols; we ain't fake," said Lydon, reminiscent of the band's snarling late bassist, Sid Vicious.
"And we don't care," Jones replied.
Later on, Lydon reflected on the band's heyday, quick breakup and 1996 world reunion tour, but said he couldn't do it again, citing stage fright and infighting.
"I miss the Sex Pistols. I miss the lot of you," he said. "But if anybody thinks it's a jolly good wheeze, it's not. It's hard work."

Bien, te lo explico.
Te supongo enterado de bandas de heavy metal cristiano como Stryper y los que vinieron después como Vengeance Risisng, Deliverance, o Tourniquet (y si no lo estas, tampoco hace falta). Estos últimos ya empezaron a meter pinceladas death a sus canciones a principios de la década de los 90 e inspiradas en las bandas de Death de esa época. La banda más popular de Death cristiano fueron los Mortification. Ellos, junto a otros grupos como Bellver, Ultimátum, Living Sacrifice o Betrayal fueron la primera punta de lanza de la unión entre estos dos conceptos antagónicos (si alguien tiene curiosidad los puede escuchar en discos como Post Momentary Affiction o Scrolls Of The Megiloth). Fueron bastante populares entre la peña cristiana, creando incluso una pequeña escena en Australia con grupos como Oblation, Metanoia o otros muchos. Fue el miembro de los Mortification, concretamente Jayson Sherlock, tras diversos intentos de crear un grupo de Blas metal cristianos (los Beheadoth o los Vomoth), creo el primer disco de Unblack metal: Helling Usvart bajo el nombre de Horde, editado en el sello Nuclear Blast (alucinante). Eso fue en 1994. Horde era un grupo de una sola persona, para más información. Este disco, tiempo después, fue reeditado por la compañía australiana Rowe Productions, que cobijaba a la mayor parte de la escena metalero cristiana de ese país. En este disco, Sherlock firmaba bajo el nombre de Anonymous, un claro “homenaje” a la figura de del fallecido lider de Mayhem y contenía títulos tan espectaculares como “Invert The Inverted Cross”. Naturalmente, el disco estaba totalmente inspirado en la primera hornada de grupos black metal nórdicos.
A partir de entonces empezaron a surgir bandas que siguieron la estela de Horde. Los Antestor cambiaron su estilo para meterse en este asunto. Editaron su “The Return Of The Black Death” en es sello Cacophonus, el sello que descubrió a Craddle Of Filth y Dimmu Borgir (cuando se dieron cuenta de lo que realmente era este disco, lo retiraron de su catálogo rápidamente). Luego nacieron bandas en el norte de Europa como Crimson Moonlight, Extol, Vaakevandring, Vixivi o Mordecai, bandas que tuvieron una influencia decisiva en la escena cristiana sudamericana, donde el unblack tiene más presencia actualmente que nunca, debido a la fuerte presencia de la Iglesia en este continente.
Esta es, en esencia, la génesis del asunto. Actualmente hay grupos a patadas y en todos lados, cientos de paginas web relacionas con el asunto y todo eso, para cabreo mayúsculo de los metaleros auténticos y de seguidores de otros estilos, porque el asunto este llega hasta el punk / hardcore, el hip hop, el heavy metal, el pop, la electrónica y todo los que queráis. -

**NEW YORK – Their songs should be so passionate. The frontmen for intertwined rock bands Guns N' Roses and Velvet Revolver — both struggling to complete albums for release later this year — have spent the past week or so spewing venom back and forth. Which can't be bad for business.The feud began when top Gunner Axl Rose launched a countersuit against his former GNR bandmates Saul "Slash" Hudson and Michael "Duff" McKagan, who left GNR in the 1990s and have since formed Velvet Revolver. The two had filed suits in 2004 and 2005 seeking the rights to the old GNR songs, accusing Rose of killing deals that would have put their songs in a half-dozen movies, including "Old School," and "Black Hawk Down."
Rose's counterclaim asks a Federal Court to confirm his ownership of his "creative works" and defends his decision to choose when to license the music and to whom.
But Rose didn't leave it there.
He added a diatribe against his former lead guitarist, accusing Slash of making "negative and malicious statements" about him "in order to garner publicity for himself." He described Slash as a "consummate press, photo and media opportunist and manipulator" who was trying to "take credit for something that was not his."
But it was a bizarre addendum to the statement, totally unrelated to the suit, that drew the wrath of Velvet Revolver lead singer Scott Weiland. Rose recalled a day last October where Slash, whom he hadn't spoken to in almost a decade, showed up unannounced at his door at 5:30 one morning. Rose claimed that during their conversation Slash tore into his VR bandmates, calling Duff "spineless" and Weiland "a fraud," among other things. Despite Slash's hard-partying reputation, Rose insisted his former bandmate did not appear under the influence when he allegedly made these comments during this pre-dawn meeting.
The story raised hopes among die-hard GNR fans wishing for a reunion and disillusionment among dedicated VR fans, who worried this could spell the end.
Following the statement, the normally media-friendly Slash was uncharacteristically silent, making no comment on Rose's statement.
The deafening silence appeared to validate Rose's comments about the meeting and further fueled talk of a pending Velvet Revolver breakup.
On the third day, though, Weiland went ballistic, issuing his own statement in retaliation. On VR's official web site, he called Rose "fat," "Botox faced," "wig wearin'" plus other names that can't be printed here. He also attacked Rose's long-delayed album and ridiculed his aborted 2002 tour.
"What we're talking about here," Weiland said, "is a frightened little man who once thought he was king, but unfortunately this king without his court is nothing but a memory."**

En Estados Unidos q están chiflados hacen un festival de música cristina donde va mucha gente y uno de los escenarios es de bandas de hardcore, hip hop -... cristiano. 30" sabes el nombre? Es que lo leí pero no sé donde.Como cuado tocaron los No Innocent Victim en Barcelona, unos amigos míos, me contaron que dijeron q tocaban en nombre de la iglesia cristiana y no sé que más. Ellos hacen hardcore metal cristiano. Curiosamente han girado con los más conocidos metaleros P.O.D. (tb cristianos)
Una vez monté un concierto a Plastic Pride y Blindside de Suecia dos bandas muy buenas de hardcore. Blindisde hacen hardcore metal cristiano y también recuerdo que empezaron el concierto dijeron que su propuesta iba del rollo religioso y que si no lo eras no pasaba nada, que te quedases a pasarlo bien con su música. Sus discos en U.S.A. se editaban en la compañía de hardcore cristiana Tooth and Nail Records con Furhter seems forever, underoath...
Por supuesto hay otros sellos del tema.De Black metal cristiano tengo pocos discos. No conozco muchos.
Por cierto no soy religioso.

En España hay alguna cosilla. Hay un grupo que se llama Mision, pero hacen pop rock. En TVAmistad ví un vídeo de un par de hiphoperos cristianos españoles y, de vez en cuando, pasan alguna cosilla curiosa.
Y para acabar: ¿alguien se acuerda de un grupo de Barcelona de trash metal llamado Legion? Llegaron a grabr 3 discos, uno de ellos en USA y estaban muy bien considerados. Pues bien, el alma mater del grupo, Jonathan Dolcet (voz y bajo), dejó el grupo para tirarase al evangelio. Si el grupo, que se disolvio entonces, hubiese continuado en activo, hubiese sido el primero de metal crsitiano de EspañaSi hay algún interesado en eltema,puede darse una vuelta por esta web en castellano
