        levek / look a little closer (lefse, 2012)

        ▼ download

        @38g6xzvs:

        Smooth as a playboy mansion afterparty back in the 70ies…a young Curtis Mayfield with a dash of Moon Safari...Florida based David Levesque aka Levek, makes warm, sexy and often acapella songs for in between the sheets or covered in a golden sunset...

        Sonically, Look A Little Closer is the amalgamation of the tenderness of Bridge Over Troubled Water and the funky 70s Blaxploitation attitude. On the lead single “Black Mold Grow,” soaring harmonies bleed into a soulful disco swagger, a perfect contrast to the slinky bossanova-esque “Terra Treasures.” It’s a pastiche of genres that live harmoniously in unison on record and in the mind of the man behind Levek. “The inspiration,” Levesque says quite matter-of-factly “was just to make an album that I’ve always wanted someone else to make. Something that I would enjoy listening to.”

        stealing sheep / into the diamond sun (heavenly, 2012)

        @38g6xzvs:

        What’s in the water up on Merseyside? It’s as if there’s an endless source of almost psychedelic otherness running deep beneath the place. It’s there in the music of everyone from the La’s to Ladytron; an off-kilter wonder that sets the place and its art apart from the rest of the country.

        Stealing Sheep are very much a group channelling that source. You could hear it in their first recordings, released collectively as the Noah & The Paper Moon e.p. And its there flowing throughout their debut album proper, Into The Diamond Sun, a collection of songs that don’t so much defy genres as gleefully hand-pick the most mellifluous elements of everything from voodoo folk, DIY pop, post punk and analogue electronica, and stitch them together into a glorious harmonic whole.

        teen / in limbo (carpark, 2012)

        ▼ download

        @38g6xzvs:

        Since 2002, TEEN's lead singer/songwriter, Teeny Lieberson, has been playing in bands around New York City, eventually becoming the keyboard player for the indie-psych band Here We Go Magic in 2008. During a hiatus from the band in the winter of 2009, Teeny wrote a five-song EP Little Doods, the foundation of TEEN's full-length, In Limbo. Working with many of the songs written that winter with the desire to expand the sound from four-track/lo-fi to a fully flushed out sound, Teeny recruited her sisters, Lizzie and Katherine, along with long- time friend, Jane Herships and best friend since childhood, Maia Ibar, to become members of TEEN.

        TEEN spent the summer of 2011 recording In Limbo in Maia's family barn in rural Connecticut, engineered by Jen Turner of Here We Go Magic.

        In Limbo was mixed and produced in collaboration with producer Pete Kember (Spacemen 3 / Spectrum). Kember, a.k.a. Sonic Boom, first heard the band via an early video while he was mixing Panda Bear’s Tomboy at Blanker Unsinn studio in Brooklyn, and after hearing some demos, signed up to produce a full LP of their material as soon as possible.

        the limiñanas / crystal anis (trouble in mind/hozac, 2012)

        @38g6xzvs:

        New CD - Liminanas - Crystal Anis - Hooray! The Liminanas usher in their follow up to their stunning self titled debut on Trouble In Mind. HoZac is behind this beauty and has all the details here:
        "And here it is folks, the sophomore LP outing from the French breakthrough underground sensations, The Limiñanas, who are embarking on an even darker journey on this voyage into the stickiest, most vulnerable parts of your brain. After triumphantly completing their maiden US tour last year and proving to the world how effortlessly they capture their recorded essence in a live setting, they have returned with Crystal Anis, an LP brimming with perfect, humming, fuzz-filled effervescent pop so alluring and seductive in it's most intimate points that it's easy to get lost as the heavenly sounds rush over your soul. It's a perfect slice of modern French Ye-Ye gone underground, conjuring a dimly-lit atmosphere where the long lost transcendent sounds of The Factory intersperse with modern noir nuances to unbelievable effect. This is the Limiñanas hitting their compositional peak stride, with lush instrumentation, building on their signature thick-accented tension, all properly enveloped within their monumentally textured songwriting style. 'Heavenly' doesn't even begin to describe it, but it's a great place to start.

        On Crystal Anis, The Limiñanas are at the top of their game, crafting a highly-stylized sound that's impeccably classic and undeniably modern, with their hypnotic beat and enchanting vocals, proving that once those hooks set in, it's just impossible to resist."
        The Liminanas modern Ye-Ye and fuzzed French pop travels to a darker plane on "Crystal Anis" and that suits us just fine. "Crystal Anis" finds the band further honing their chops to create some of the most compelling modern pop we've ever heard. Their sultry French croon tickles your ear holes in flirty manner giving you goose bumps further reeling you in to their chilled out vibe seduction. Bonus, features guest appearance by avant French composer Pascal Comelade. HoZac releases yet another stunner here that is sure make some year end lists we're certain. Super Recommended.

        how to dress well / total loss (weird world, 2012)

        ▼ download

        @38g6xzvs:

        Recorded over a span of 15 months in Brooklyn, Chicago, Nashville and London, Krell says that period of time was a long year that he spent “very unhappy and confused. I found myself feeling stranded, alone and depraved, and generally run the fuck down…while writing these songs I was trying to learn to lose in a meaningful way and to sustain loss as a source of creative energy”. Ergo, where Love Remains was a study of love in its darkest hour, Total Loss is an attempt to find one’s way out of darkness, even when there seems to be no light ahead. Co-produced by Rodaidh McDonald (the XX, King Krule), the album touches on many of the same sounds as Love Remains but incorporates a range of other influences and showcases Krell’s evolution as an artist. The increased fidelity of these recordings also highlights Krell’s arrangements and graceful voice in ways Love Remains had only hinted at.

        @38g6xzvs:

        It's been eight years since the Jon Spencer Blues Explosion's last record and, on September 18th, they'll end that silence with their speaker-scorching new effort, Meat and Bone. Recorded on Sly Stone's own "Riot" Flickinger console at the Key Club Studio in Benton Harbor, Michigan, the crunchy new LP finds Spencer, Judah Bauer and Russel Simins returning to their scuzzy blues basics with tracks like "Bag of Bones," "Danger" and the excellently-titled "Ice Cream Killer."

              ahleuchatistas / heads full of poison (cuneiform, 2012)

              ▼ download

              @29p8ldr1:

              North Carolina instrumental rock duo Ahleuchatistas belong to the beyond-category sector of such iconic, genre-flouting combos as John Zorn’s Naked City, Captain Beefheart’s Magic Band, Swans, Tortoise, and Sun City Girls.

              On their seventh album and third for Cuneiform, Ahleuchatistas’ Heads Full of Poison is a sonic brew that reveals new flavors, new spices with every aural taste. Now a duo of charter member Shane Perlowin (guitar and bass) and Ryan Oslance (drums), Heads Full of Poison was developed over a two year period, road-tested and honed with numerous performances, including nearly 100 in Europe. The music was altered, edited, and embellished at nearly every gig with improvisational possibilities explored at length. The music combines highly detailed composition with a looseness that encourages a range of interpretation. Each track was recorded live in the studio. Oslance performed all the drums and percussion live with zero overdubs. Perlowin produced the various guitars and bass tracks to impart the richness and detail of a conceptualized studio album, but the basic tracks are performed live. By the time of the recording in January and February 2012, the music had been given ample time to ferment, so the performances captured are as close to perfection as possible, with technical hurdles surmounted, the sonic palette settled upon, each note and beat executed confidently and with nuance.

                      SUNFLARE - Ghetto Blast LP (Bat Shit Records, 2012)

                      Sunflare- Ghetto Blast LP. Seemingly out of nowhere this heavy (and I mean HEAVY) psych punk band emerged from Portugal. Hands down my favorite psych outfit I've heard in SEVERAL years. This new album presents two massive side-long freak-outs that fully deliver on the promise of dishing the goods. The rhythm section is just brain-buzzingly primitive, while the guitar is completely over the top, all soloing, all fuzz, all wah-wah and everything I dig about a psych record.

                                          @2lvmprjo:

                                          Manchester’s Alan Roberts is a king of deception. The stage name suggests a dark persona, but, if Jim Noir is an alter ego, he seems suspiciously similar to a 60s-obsessed one-man band making his music in various rundown bits of Manchester.
                                          Noir’s best-known song, the 2005 single My Patch, sounded like the jauntiest music-hall sing-along this side of a northern Chas ‘n’ Dave, but its hook-line was a threat: “If you ever step on my patch / I’ll bring you down.” And Jimmy’s Show, Noir’s third album, could be a 13-track trip down The Beatles’ Penny Lane, blending the various song styles of Paul McCartney, Ray Davies, Brian Wilson and Gruff Rhys into a cute lo-fi celebration of a northern town on a sunny day; all trees, fishes, trips out to the country and cups of tea.
                                          But beneath Noir’s almost offhand genius with melody and Beach Boys harmonies, misery and alienation lurks. The Tired Hairy Man With Parts is a song about being too unhappy to get out of bed. Tea is really about being too scared of the local muggers and thugs to brave a trip to the off-licence. And Driving My Escort Cosworth to the Cake Circus is a paean to his own irresponsibility with motors: “I’m a stereotypical public nuisance,” he trills, all rock rebellion replaced by resigned shame.
                                          But Noir shouldn’t get too down on himself, for he may just be a genius. The likes of the aforementioned Driving My Escort… and Tea join the Sgt Pepper’s-ish opener X Marks the Spot, Sunny, The Cheese of Jim’s Command and Timepiece in illuminating a set which is what The Beta Band promised but couldn’t deliver. It’s an album of perfect modern psychedelia, pristine in content but ramshackle in style, as at home with synths and drum machines as it is with acoustic guitars and martial Ringo drums, and packed full of sadness and dread and love for a ghostly choirboy harmony.
                                          Jimmy’s Show tells you a sorry tale of woe, but then shrugs, and grins, and gives you a hug and a cup of tea laced with magic mushrooms.

                                          Efterklang´s 4th album and their first as a trio. The album is inspired from an expedition to the ghost town of Piramida on the island of Spitsbergen just a 1000Km from the North Pole. Mads, Casper and Rasmus travelled to Piramida in August 2011 and brought with them home a library of more than a 1000 field recordings that later was incorporated in the making of the songs forming the album Piramida.
