Coincido bastante manel. Lo escuché este pasado fin de semana en dos fases en coche a medio-bajo volumen y la verdad que pasé un rato bien interesante con el disco de pintarrajos del payo Sun Araw mientras callejeaba por Guadalajara, en contra de mis previsiones a medida que empezaba a sonar. Me ha sorprendido para bien. Coincido completamente en lo de Black Dice Vs Sun Araw, de hecho por momentos me lo imaginé. Es interesante esta maniobra, me mola que los artistas que me gustan se desmarquen del sonido que venian haciendo cuando llevan X discos parecidos, asi evitan el estancamiento, y aunque lo hagan para hacer mierdas sin ton ni son, que tampoco me parece el caso, yo lo suelo celebrar. Discrepo parcialmente en lo de la "densidad" del trabajo, que si bien puede ser más rico en contenido, en cuanto a cantidad ruidos, experimentación y eso, ese magma pesado que envolvía sus temas y los emparentaba con (por ej.) Peaking Lights (bastante copiotas del sonido sun araw ahora que lo pienso) ha desaparecido, ahora suena como más desnudo y caótico, no tan fluido, pero un caos que desdencadena feedbacks llamativos, aunque insisto en mi escucha superficial mientras conducía, quizás no lo más adecuado a la hora de sunarawear… ya me rebozaré con él otro día más en plan cuerpo a cuerpo. No me parece un disco tan trabajado como los anteriores, lo cual no quiere decir que no me parezca estimulante, ni malo, de hecho es un disco mucho más interesante en según que contexto de escucha, o al menos así a primera vista. Conclusión final: Sun Araw mola mucho y seguirá molando, y a ver si viene al primavera, leches! o adonde sea. Y ahora ya puedo ir a ducharme.

It takes about thirty seconds to quietly recognise that this may well be one of those Important Records: the type you will listen to repeatedly, disassemble, and schizophrenically swing from favourite song to favourite song like a fickle debutante. Melbourne's Smith St. Band, fronted by punk poet Will Wagner, have built a passionate following over the past 18 months, armed with an unhinged live show and an accomplished debut record, which manages to be desperate, poetic and jagged, while also being inviting, warm and melodic. Impressively, they have superseded every element of their debut (No One Gets Lost Anymore) on album #2, and done so without compromising their ragged energy, or by self-consciously stifling Wagner's deft turn of phrase. The lyrics tumble out in torrents: Wagner has a lot to tell you, and is confident in your ability to receive his tales of love, drugs, frustration and inner-city sharehouses at the frantic pace he flings them at you. Album number two is bigger, brasher and bolder than the debut. Obvious touchstones include Oberst's lyrical spill and Springsteen's (or Gaslight Anthem's, if you please) open-road tales of dirt and dreams. Death and aging come up a lot: Young Drunk finds Wagner intoxicated and tackling the big issues of life and death, walking around in his childhood suburb after a funeral; Why I Can't Draw sees him "sitting around the table, drinking, hoping no-one would ever die"; What’s Changed and Stay Young see priorities shift as friends and lovers grow and grow apart. All the songs beautifully blend bleak imagery and eternal optimism - Wagner's earnest lyrical content never grates nor feels overindulgent, which is quite a feat for such unabashed heart-on-sleeve songwriting.

Isis has announced the details for their upcoming posthumous retrospective collection. The record is titled, Temporal and is due out November 6th, 2012. It's set to include unreleased rarities, remixes and videos spanning the band's thirteen year career. The set also features fourteen songs spread over two discs and five music videos on an accompanying DVD.
Three members of Isis - Aaron Harris, Jeff Caxide and Clifford Meyer - recently partnered with Chino Moreno (Deftones) to form Palms. The band's debut album will be out in early 2013 via Ipecac. Aaron Turner's Old Man Gloom released, No in late June and he will be touring the U.S., Japan and Europe this fall with Old Man Gloom and Mamiffer. Mike Gallagher continues on with his solo project MGR as well as scoring -

Friends since school, PAWS are made up of Phillip, Joshua and Matthew, and are based in Glasgow, Scotland. The band play (in their own words) ‘infectious, lo-fi, garage pop-rock’ and have already made a name for themselves in Glasgow as one of the best Scottish live bands currently on the scene

When the kick drum enters halfway through side two, it is the only sound on the record that is not an acoustic guitar or a solo voice. Joan of Arc's s/t album (also known as "Self-Titled" and "Charlie Chaplin and The Elephant Man") is Joan of Arc grappling with simplicity and minimalism.
Side one is six folk songs, five of them very short. Each song offers a different perspective, layering the recurring classic folk themes of work, performance and endurance.
